What is the procedure for MEA apostille Service in Chennai/Tamil Nadu?
To get the MEA apostille done, first, every original document needs to be apostille or attestation by the designated authority in the State where the documents have been issued. The documents are categorized into three chief categories: educational; personal and commercial respectively. In the case of educational documents, the documents first need to be authenticated by the Educational Department of the concerned State Government/Union Territory. If the document is personal, then the documents need to be authenticated by the Home Department/ General Administration Department by the designated authority. With this, if the documents are commercial, then the document must be authorized by the Chamber of Commerce. The Ministry of External Affairs only signs the documents based on the signature of the designated signing authorities of the designated authority, hence not responsible for the content of the documents.
MEA Apostille
India is a member of the Hague Convention, which abolish the requirement of legalization of foreign public documents. Apostille is acceptable in 98 member-countries of the Convention. MEA Apostille is done for personal documents such as birth, marriage certificate, affidavits, etc; and educational documents such as degree, diploma, secondary level certificates, etc.
Documents required for MEA Apostille
The original documents need to be authenticated by the designated authority of the State Government are apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs on the reverse side of the original documents. The applicants need to submit the following documents with fees.
- Original document to be attested or apostille
- One clear photocopy of the document
- One clear photocopy of the passport
Document Submission
The documents need either be submitted to our Chennai office (No: B 1, "Prince Manor" 114, Purasawalkam High Road, Chennai – 600010) or the applicant can also parcel the required documents. Documents will be delivered only on production of a receipt for payment of service charge, in case if the documents are found fake or authentication forgery, then the documents are seized by the Ministry of External Affairs. The Ministry of External Affairs may take the appropriate legal action against the applicant and the fees or services charges paid to us or Ministry of External Affairs are not refundable at any circumstance.
Note: For MEA Apostille, original documents need to be previously authenticated first by the respective HRD/HD.
